Death of a parent in law

My SO lost his mother a few years ago. We havent been together too long but we are completely and totally in love. Our relationship is very serious. So he asked if I wanted to go with him to see his mom and I said ofcourse. We went and basically just stood there in silence... I had no idea what to say or do so i just tried to comfort him. We plan to go again soon for a visit.
