No, never and never will be.
Unfortunately, I have experience how many friends (even intelligent women and men) live in abusive relationships, mostly emotional abuse like being betrayed, denigrated, disrespected, intimidated, etc.)
On the basis of my experience, who live, agree, accept or endure in an abusive relationship, lack in self-esteem, self-respect and self-confidence. Most abusers find subtle ways to manipulate the victim, either laying or brainwashing it into thinking what they want and instill that every mistake in the relationship is their fault.
But any person can free himself from it; (alone, through family, friends or the use of counseling or support organizations) and is never too late!

It started with him being my best friend, who was in love with me, despite my liking girls. I let him do things from time to time.. and it just got worse the closer we got - he became sexually and emotionally abusive - and I became more and more blind to it. My mental health good a great toll as well as my physical health. It took a long time to get him out of my life, and he's tried to come back in, but I've done well with keeping him out.

Answer

Never. I saw too many family members staying in abusive relationships when I was growing up, and would be gone in a flash if anything like that ever started happening. Fortunately, my hubby is the least controlling/abusive person around:)
