Do you congratulate accidental pregnancies in teenagers?

I personally don't when I know the parents-to-be are far from prepared to parent. Anyone who is stable and expecting hears a hearty congratulations from me, but two teens who had an oops? Nope.

It's not your business to decide who you think is "prepared to be a parent". I know people that look stable on the outside--nice house, lots of money--but I wouldn't trust them to raise a snail. Just because someone is younger does not mean that they are going to be shitty parents or even that their baby was an "oops". Nor do you know what's really going on in their lives. Perhaps she was raped and is struggling and your negativity because you don't know could really affect her. It's a baby and all babies are gifts. God put them there for a reason and it's none of your damn business what that reason is.

Of course I would congratulate them. Even if they were planning to place the baby up for adoption, it's still a wonderful thing. Planned or not. 16 or not. I'm not a mean person.

Your post comes off as terribly condescending andjudgmental. Not sure why you feel the need to be so rude to a woman expecting a child. It isn't your place to decide if it is a blessing for the couple or not. That's for them to decide.

Sorry, but I'm not about to congratulate a 15 year old on getting knocked up. Especially if it was done on purpose. What kind of world are we living in where people think this is a good idea???? I will say good luck to your child, it's obviously going to need it. You know, because it's going to be raised by another child and all.

Yes all babies are gifts, but I wouldn't congratulate a teen couple for being careless and unintentionally getting pregnant

I do. What's happened has happened, there's no going back, so you might as well be positive and encourage them to be good parents.

I think that would be terrible not to congratulate someone on their baby. No person has the ideal situation. Its unfair to judge. Just the other day I congratulated a girl on her baby. She is 16, mentally challenged, was knocked up by 29 yr old man and then sent home to her mom. Her mom is going to help raise the baby. Its way way less than ideal but I'm not going to be mean. I think she made a decision for herself and will do an OK job. She plans on finishing highschool at home by correspondence.

I think I would say something more along the "good luck" or "best wishes" route. Certainly not congratulations. Depending on the person I may add "I'm here for you if you need me".

I think you can offer kindness and support without congratulating someone.... Plus not everyone wants to be congratulated some people didn't intend or want to be pregnant.... I also think that faking being happy for somebody can put an extreme amount of pressure on them especially if they are trying to make personal decisions about things like adoption....
