Nipple Shields?!?

Question

Can anyone who has used these tell me if they worked and if they liked them? Right now I am going to try one with my 4 day old because I think I have overactive letdown and its choking her and because my nipples hurt and burn so bad because of her stopping and starting that it makes me want to cry. I am seeing a lactation consultant tomorrow so I will also ask her but I wanted to try to get some relief between now and then. If anyone has any tips or tricks to using these or breastfeeding in general I would like to know.

They worked miracles for me! I highly recommend them! Use coconut oil to help with your nipples too. From cracking and burning.

I used them with some success with my first for 3 months but it was because she had a tongue tie and it was extremely painful to nurse her even with the shields. From what I know about them it should help with your problem too.

I used a nipple shield for 3-4 months with my first because of flat nipples so idk for sure if it will solve your particular problem but it's worth a try! It's a hassle using them but definitely worth it if it helps you keep breastfeeding. Eventually I didn't need it anymore so it's not a permanent thing, either, and I breastfed for 14 months. The main reason it was a hassle was I had to use it every time, I always had to clean it after and get it wet before so it would stick. I used medela and got it for free from the lactation consultant at my hospital.

I wouldn't use unless your nipples are inverted...I was told to use with my first and it was miserable. I ended up getting mastitis and further complications. I warn everyone not to use unless absolutely necessary.

I'm using the medala shield, it's a life saver as baby does not latch or stay on boob without it but is fine when using it

I used a nipple shield with my first. I have one nipple that likes to invert sometimes and it was such a life saver to have the shield! It made the latching on process much easier until the baby grew bigger, stronger and had learned how to latch better.

I used one with my little guy. He was too laZy and won't open his mouth or wake up fully to feed. He was one sleepy newborn. Because of th shiled I never got raw nipples and it taught him to open his mouth wider. They say it slows down your flow but that wasn't true at all. My milk came in strong in day three after birth. I had to use the shiled for my first month. I never lost supply. Only thing I hated about it was it was messy and if your baby starts to move thier head it will come off. If she latches on fine with no problem I sugest don't start with the shield you will confuse her. Try rubbing breast milk on your nipple even coconut oil on them even nipple cream

I would definitely give them a try!  My first had a tough time latching and I didn't try them until after I had mastitis 3 times and really sore nipples. I had read somewhere that nipple should were bad so I avoided them until I was desperate. I almost gave up and exclusively pumped. I wish I had tried them earlier!  They saved our breastfeeding experience and they were easy to wean her from after a month of use. Good luck!

My lactation consultant advised against nipple shields. She said that you need to get a good latch to avoid pain and nipple shields are unnatural and can make baby latching more difficult. Honestly I have no idea! If you're in that much pain see what your nurse says tomorrow! :)

I used them with my daughter because she was having a hard time latching, and was getting dehydrated. We used them for a few months, and I was able to wean her off using them. I would definitely talk to the lactation consultant to figure out if that's the best next step for you. I'm just saying that because it was kind of stressful making sure I always had one clean. Plus they are clear, so I would lose them all the time. I had a good experience with them. She may not be latching right which definitely cause some nipple tenderness. Know that your nipples will get used to it and it won't hurt anymore. Good luck.
