How much did your normal/routine delivery cost?

This is my first and I have no idea what to expect with costs. It seems like everyone charges whatever so you get big ranges.

The birth center I had my heart set on and had my first 2 prenatal appts with gave me a sheet of their rate today. It was a pre-insurance total of $12,000! They also bill me at my health insurance's family deductible of $4500, even though I have an individual plan at a $1500 deductible. In fact about 75% of the services they'll be doing are for me and 25% will be when the baby's born. Doesn't that see shady to charge all of my stuff at a family deductible? What if my fiancé put our baby on his plan?

That means after insurance, I'm expected to pay $8K out of pocket! I thought birth centers were supposed to be cheaper than hospitals.

Anyway I'm pretty upset because there's just no way I can afford to pay that. I need to call around and find out what other hospitals and centers charge.

For anyone with a normal birth with no interventions, what did you end up paying out of pocket?

Canadian health care doesn't charge. I feel very fortunate.

You should have your baby in a hospital. If you tell them you do not have insurance you will only have to pay 10% of your total bill. For a c-section its like $50,000, so you would pay $5,000 total. I would def. go the hospital route.

It seems like you may need to contact your insurance company directly to find out what they cover/how it works with the deductible.

I think the deductible goes to your family deductible. So for instance my personal deductible is $1500 but the family is $2000. So the personal goes towards the family and will cover all your pre baby bills. Then when the baby is born the baby goes to the family. So at most it's $2000 the end. For me at least. Family deductible. That's the most. I think.

Insurance is the most confusing thing that ever happened.

I had to pay a $25 copy with all pregnant visits which is good. Then after the baby was born I only had to
Pay $1500 out of pocket when the total bill was $17,000. But there was a slight complication and forceps were added
To the bill which was a ridicous amount to charge.

Have you considered having you and your husband have separate insurance? Just for the time being to help you lower cost?

My pregnancy and delivery is covered 100% by insurance. We already met our $250 deductible with an optional genetic test, so we're totally covered.

You need to talk directly to your insurance company, all plans are different and can cover different facilities at different rates.

Also, if you find that your out of pocket costs are going to be too much, talk to the hospital and see if they have an assistance program and if you're eligible.

I have no idea yet what the hospital will charge, but the doctor is collecting her delivery fee ahead of time (about$650), plus I think the copay for each prenatal visit is $15, but I'm not positive, because they are way behind on their billing.

For just my dr/delivery it's $1000, used to be $400 then my insurance changed. But that also covers all the prenatal visits I've been having. Different insurances have different contracts with offices so that with your deductible and coverage determines these varying prices. I haven't even found out what the hospital charge will be yet but I picked a better hospital in the next town so it's more expensive than what I could be paying. They definitely make sure to get their money.
