Is genetic testing something most people do?

Do most people choose to do genetic testing or is it something done when someone is concerned of health risk that run in the family?

I did it because I wanted to know for several reasons.

It's something hubby and I talked at length about. We decided to get it if insurance covered it. So, our insurance did cover it 100% as they considered it "preventative measures" so we did it. I was on the fence and he was for it.

I will do it because I have rheumatoid arthritis, mthfr, and ehlers danlos.

I didn't do it, due to moving and my insurance switching over to a new region I wasn't first seen until 15 weeks. So they told me I was past the window to test for everything besides spina bifida. I asked her if most people get the tests done and she told me only about 50% do. She said since we have no history of Down syndrome in either of our families and as I'm not over 35 that they wouldn't have pushed me to do the testing anyway.

I think the parents are tested/questioned first, and if there are no risk factors for inheritable diseases, then the fetus isn't tested for those. My insurance covers genetic and sex testing 100% for women 30 and older. We did it and knew her sex in the first trimester, from the sample they took for the DS test.

I only did it after I got a soft marker for Downs Stndrome at the anatomy scan. The results wouldn't have made a difference in whether or not I chose to keep the baby, of course, but it's good to have time to mentally prepare. Tests came back normal, though.

I did it because Downs syndrome runs in my family. :) it wouldn't have effected whether I kept the baby, but time better prepare for her birth.
