How important is swaddling?

My son is just over 3 weeks and hated being swaddled. We've barely done it aince being home from the hospital because he hated every type of swaddle I've bought. I keep trying because I keep reading how important it is but not sure if I really need to do it?

Swaddling really helps my LO sleep for long stretches of time (1 - 3 hrs). If I don't swaddle he usually gets the startle reflex or keeps scratching his face and can barely sleep past 30mins.

I have a Velcro swaddle and it seems to creep up on him and get close to his face. He moves his hands up which I know is more comforting for him but it loves the swaddle up closer to his face... So I keep looking at him to make sure he hasn't moved it too far and I can see his nose and mouth. I have tried folding it down, but it doesn't stay. 
Any suggestions? It definitely helps him sleep but now I need to sleep too instead of checking on him 5 million times!

Are you swaddling with his arms down by his side or bent and folded up by his face? My guy hated it too until my doc said we were doing it wrong. They like their arms folded up by their face (like in the womb).

Some babies like it and it makes them feel secure. Some babies hate it. The point of it is largely to keep them warm while preventing SIDS. If you can keep your baby adequately warm without swaddling you don't need to bother with it.

My little guy is an escape artist. We've got the Velcro swaddlers, and he always manages to get his arms out. I've tried folding his arms different ways, and positioning the swaddler differently.

My baby girl hates to be swaddled too and we ended up getting a baby pod to help her be at an incline so she is still snuggled up.. Then she started to be fussy in that after a while so we bought the Halo Swaddle Sack which swaddles her arms only and is a sack for her legs and and she sleeps heavenly!! She is 4 weeks old and last night she only woke up once!

We swaddled our little girl until the orthopedic told us not to. She's in a harness for hip dysplasia and her legs can't be tight. There are many kinds that are terrible for their hips, we were told by the ortho the safest ones are the halo sleep sacks.
