Baby shower dilemma

My husband and I live on the east coast due to work and our families live on the west coast. We might be visiting around the holidays, but haven't solidified our plans. I'm not sure if I want a baby shower while we visit. With the costs of flying out, and checking luggage, it feels overwhelming. We normally use one carry on luggage per person and stay about a week.

I was wondering if it would be a horrible idea to just refer people who are inclined to gift baby items to an online registry and having it shipped to us. Our families are avid online shoppers, so it's not going to be a challenge for them if I choose this route.
