Interracial dating problem?

I am asking because in high school I was the talk of the high school for eternity as the freshman who dated a senior who is African American. In fact 3 years later a guy at a dance asked me to dance with him- I did- but excused myself because he was looking down at my chest the entire time. He turned around and spat at me "what's a matter, only date black guys?"

I think it all has me emotionally scarred to some degree. Also, my last relationship was 3 years and the breaking point between us was my mother- who my Asian ex was convinced she didn't like because of his race.

We recently reconnected and things are going along great. He makes me laugh and we both relate really well because we're both entering the medical field. He's a really sweet, nice, intelligent and sexy guy whom I am looking forward to meeting his family over dinner.

I just don't want to have my mother be in denial over my relationship for years. However, one of the oldest family friends is African American and the oldest son is dating a white girl- whom my mom totally approves of their relationship.

The way I look at it is, if it's meant to be it'll be and love is love- it should only matter what the two people think of another.

I'm just asking for advice. Feel free to answer any part of them or add your own comment. Anyone been in a similar situation? It's rough when your mother seemingly hates someone you love. What did you do about it and how did things turn out?
