Contractions stopping?

I'm 39 weeks. Me and my SO Had sex last night around 11 and I started having contractions. Started slow like Braxton hicks and then an hr or so later were really intense. I waited till about 2am to wake my husband up to let him know it may be time to go to the hospital my contractions were about 6 minutes apart at this point and were very painful. I decided to drink a bottle of water and lay down because we live about and hr from the hospital and I didn't want to get all the way there and them send me home. Anyways about an hr after I drank the water and laid down my contractions slowed down and stopped :( has this happened to anyone else and then end up delivering soon?
