Doula or no Doula?

What are your thoughts? My first Midwife appointment is Oct 21st. I'm wondering if I'll need additional support from a Doula or will the Midwife be enough?

A doula is there to support you and stand up for you and your decisions on how you want to deliver your baby. She makes sure you are comfortable and taken care of. For example, if the dr is pushing you to get an epidural and its against your plan, the doula will stand up for your plan.

I'm expecting my first baby in May 2016 (6 weeks today). I've been a doula for five years and had close to 13 clients total and I will definitely be looking for one if my husband isn't comfortable doing doula things during labor and delivery. A doula is a support professional who is concerned with your emotional and physical well-being. While an OB will catch your baby and coach you during delivery, a doula will be there from the minute you go into labor, dedicated to you and your baby's well-being and helping you achieve the birth and delivery you want. A doula is NOT a medical professional and can't give you medical advice but she can make sure you're hydrated, give you massages, suggest comfortable positions and movements, make sure you give informed consent, and make sure any other guests in the room are OK too. Definitely support doulas. :)

I am definitely planning to hire a doula! This is my first and I feel like it will be worth every penny to have the dedicated, focused support.

Well my additional question would be what can a doula do that the 3 midwifes and 4 doctors i have do that they cant lol

I was going to hire my doula with my first pregnancy and then we couldn't get it to work out financially, second pregnancy we were talking to her again and then she broke her ankle! So both pregnancies I didn't have one and I wish I would've. Extra support is always good, especially when your husband just sits in the corner all tired bc he's doing so much work trying to stay awake! lol!
