MIL or Me?

DH & myself were arguing today and my MIL told me that she would take my child from me if we split up. We're both in our early 20's and I was wondering what you ladies thought because I was about ready to flip out.

She can threaten all she wants but the only way anyone can take your child is if you are unfit.

My mother in law offered to adopt my baby as early as 15 or so weeks pregnant. I almost slapped the shit out of her. She still keeps it open as an option, but I am happily married to my husband. I think it all boils down to a lack of respect. I ended up laying down the law with my mother in law, and now she is scared of me. In the words of Machiavelli, it is best for the prince(ss) to be loved and feared

My MIL threatened me the same exact way I was 21 at the time and I was in the hospital it was about 2 days after I gave birth , I had her kicked out by the nurses and didn't let her see my daughter for 3 weeks (it would of been longer if my husband hadn't forced me to let her see the baby). Now i'm pregnant again and she had the nerve to say  once the other baby is born to let them have my daughter um yeah OVER MY DEAD BODY ! she's crazy . 
Don't worry, no one can take your baby from you unless they can prove that you're an unfit mother.

Sounds like she's trying to scare, manipulate, intimidate, and force you into staying with your husband with her threats. It's probably her trying to keep her son from being embarrassed if you two do split up. She's being ridiculously immature, abusive and controlling. It's sad.

My son's grandmother threatened the same thing when I was 21. I'm not sure where you live but if you don't do anything to put the baby at risk she can't just take your baby. At most she can file for grandparents rights but that's usually only if the father is not in the picture. Good luck.  That stress is the WORST.
