How common is SIDS today ?

It is rare, but don't let people tell you it just about safe sleeping conditions. It is NOT. My daughter passed away from SIDS. She was 11 weeks. She was put to sleep on her back and no blankets in her crib. So things happen even when you do everything right.

We had a SIDS near miss, essentially. I was holding my daughter because she was really congested and it was easier for her to breathe. She made a rattling sound in her chest, stopped breathing, and started turning blue around her mouth. We spent three days in the PICU (she was 17 days old when admitted), with a final diagnosis of ALTE (apparent life threatening event) likely caused by reflux. She is now on reflux medicine and sleeping in a rock n play to keep her head elevated.

It's terrifying to know that if I hadn't been holding her, and if my husband hadn't been calm enough to perform infant CPR, she probably wouldn't be here today, at 27 days.

I am sick with worry over this. It has me crying frequently that something might happen to my baby, I'm wishing the next year away as I know the odds are even slimmer after a year old.

I think I'm also suffering slight depression which is making it worse

It's rare and steadily declining, at least in the U.S. I believe it's estimated to affect 1 baby out of every 2,000 or so. And there are specific risk factors and precautions that can raise and lower the risk for each individual baby.

It's about a 1% chance. It's very uncommon and I don't understand why we make such a huge deal about it when it's so rare.
