Is it better to go to uni with no strings attached?

I'm going to uni in September. I've been with my boyfriend nearly 6 months. All the people I've known who had boyfriends or girlfriends that went to uni ended up breaking up soon after getting there. I don't want to break up with him by any means, but I don't know if it just won't work. I mean, my boyf's at uni himself, but given that we're both still in London, it's not much of an issue. But my uni's are quite far flung, hence the issue. Advice desperately required!
