Lost nuvaring and started period again?

I was gonna have sex with my boyfriend and he reached in to take my ring out and it was gone! I must have forgotten to put it in after I took it out to shower. We just used a condom instead and I'm going to get birth control tomorrow but I went to the bathroom and was bleeding really heavily. Like period not spotting. I just ended my period like a week or so ago. Is this normal if you haven't worn a nuvaring in a couple days?
