Announcing babies birth

One of my really good friends had her baby yesterday and I happened to get on fb and see it. My cousin did this too but some of my other cousins made sure everyone close to them knew first. Maybe I'm just old fashioned because we made sure all family and close friends knew before announcing our engagement to everyone and I feel like it's kind of a big deal. Are fb blanket announcements the new thing and I'm just being overly sensitive because of pms or hopefully other reasons (but it's too early to tell)?
