How to Help a Baby Suffering from Reflux

Baby Article

Reflux is a very challenging problem for parents of young babies. As I nurse, I know all too well that many times it can cause parents to feel helpless and discouraged. 9 moms with hands-on experience caring for a baby with reflux are here to share their best tips and advice with you!

I’m SO GLAD they did, because sometimes the best advice comes from a mother whose really been there in the thick of it. And also because, every baby is different. What works for one baby, might not work for another. It’s so encouraging to have a variety of perspectives from different moms.

First of all, what is reflux?

Reflux is just your baby passively “spitting up” whatever they have just swallowed. Reflux is normal and is often the result of a baby’s underdeveloped esophagus (food canal). Most babies usually outgrow reflux by 12-14 months of age, when the ring of muscle at the bottom of their esophagus fully develops and closes off, preventing stomach contents from leaking out. It’s unusual if reflux continues at 18 months.

What are the symptoms of reflux?

When babies spit up a lot and it affects their growth or causes throat pain or breathing problems, it’s called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.
