CLOTH DIAPERING MAMAS: Is it really worth it?

Question

I'm 28 weeks with a little boy and we're trying to finalize our decision whether or not to cloth diaper him. Is it really worth it? Financially, environmentally? Is it worth the time?

I'm pretty sure all of the answers will be biased if you're only wanting cloth diapers mom's to answer. It'd be better to ask "everyone who ever considered cloth diapering, what did you choose, and why?"

For the cost aspect... SO worth it!! We only use prefolds and flip covers, so I never got into buying those fancy hybrids or pocket diapers. Our stash consists of about $300 worth of cloth for TWO kids. I wash every other day, and our electric bill hasn't gone up hardly at all, maybe by a couple cents. No water bill as we live on a well.

I did read an article several months ago how cloth diapering wasn't the most economical choice, but we do it to save money and keep different diaper ingredients off our kids bums, not for the environment.

I have zero experience, but my mom cloth diapered for me. I was potty trained by 1yr old as a result. Easier to train when the kid doesn't like the wetness, so they are less likely to resist training in favor of going in disposables that are able to pull the moisture away. She did disposables for my brother, and it took years to get him to finally be potty trained, and the costs of disposables add up quick.

But anecdote does not equal data. That's just how it went for my parents. If I had a kid, I would cloth diaper.

Financially - heck yes. But, of course your paying more up front than you would with diapers. Over time though you spend substantially less, especially if you're having multiple kids in them. Environmentally - oh most definitely. I am surprised by this poll honestly. I am curious if people voted who didn't even try cloth or didn't research cloth really well prior so they had issues and quit right away. I actually couldn't continue cloth diapering my daughter because after she was around 3 months she just started hating the feeling of them. She hated feeling wet and she knew she felt the wetness in cloth way more than disposables (we used honest disposables sometimes when out for long periods). My issue is a rare one too. We do EC with her, so she was more aware of her bodily functions than most babies. But, there's no denying that it's worth it if your little one likes them. I had no problems cleaning them and no leaks once I tweaked a few things. I suggest researching A TON. Different brands work better for different people dependent on the shape of your baby, gender, and if you have a heavy wetter. I only invested in my newborn stash and didn't invest in one size until I saw her shape and knew what kind of wetter she was. I did fitted and covers for newborn stage as you can get the best fit and best cost, since they wear them for such a short time :) it takes time of course to wash and dry them. But, financially and environmentally...it's worth the time. I of course don't have as much experience as some veteran cloth mommies, but I think most would agree! I loved cloth, it worked perfectly for us, so I was super bummed when my daughter decided she just didn't like the feeling of the materials against her! And I tried several brands too before giving up 😞

If u have time... So worth it.granted we did cloth at home & paper if we were out or at the sitter's. Better for little bootys anyway

We used cloth diapers when we were at home, or my parents and siblings houses.  Which we visited alot. We left some at there houses  and they took care of them If we used them there. ( wash them and have them ready for our next visit.)  Saved us tons of $$
