Birth certificate and fathers last name?

The father and I aren't together. He wants to be involved, which I'm happy about but he is a liar and pain in the butt to deal with. I told him I want her to have my last name and he lost it and said he wouldn't sign the birth certificate. What happens if he doesn't and am I wrong for giving her my last name? What are the pros and cons of this?

I say if you are not married have the baby have your last name until you are. You pushed that baby out it should have your name

I'm adamant about sharing my last name with the baby. If we are married before then it's his. If not we can hyphenate if he feels too strongly about baby having only mine.

Since you are not married and if he does not sign the birth certificate, you will have to take him to court order a dna test and once it's proven the child is good, the judge will put the name on the certificate and rule child support accordingly... It he's acting childish and doesn't want to be a dad because the child had your last name, I definitely would keep the baby with your last name....

My parents didn't give me my dads last name. They got married shortly after i was born but my mother didn't want to use his last name because hers sounded better with my name!! If you don't want to use his last name he really has no say at all. He's not required to sign the birth certificate so you do what you want mama!!

If y'all aren't together and it's a girl I would give her your last name. If it was a boy I would give him his dad's last name since that's his blood line that he will carry on to his future wife and kids

I don't believe the father has to sign the birth certificate. When I had my daughter the hospital requires the father present with valid id to sign affidavit of parentage to be on it. I was up in the air about adding him but that rule made the choice for me. I'll let him think I'm the bad guy that he's not on it. I also gave her my maiden name.

Give your baby your last name Trust me I know what I'm telling you. The PRO to that is you will be the one and only custodial parent which means if he tries to take her from you he can't period! 
If you let him sign you both have rights and things can get ugly if he tries to do anything since the baby will have his last name even though you're in the birth certificate yourself

In maine the mother names the child and you can give the child your last name. Particularly if he isn't in the delivery room or doesn't sign the birth certificate.  Even if he does you can still give the child your last name. There are really no legal pros and cons. It's tradition to give the fathers last name not required and you as a mother choose who is in the delivery room. If you want just you you can do it and they will remove him.
