Should criminals who become pregnant or are already pregnant be forced to become prisoners or should other options be made available?

This is how u see it.

It’s prison. It’s not day camp or a halfway resort for moms to be. Yes, when an inmate is found to be pregnant there should be some kind of board convened to determine severity of conviction and possible alternative options. But that does not need to be the norm. You’re there to lose your rights and pay the debt you owe. Don’t want to be pregnant in jail? Don’t do stupid, criminal things. I realize mistakes are made in arrest and prosecution…but I doubt miraculously that most of the pregnant inmates fall into that category. If they start allowing house arrest, etc just for pregnancy…I see the number of pregnant inmates going up exponentially

You sound like a very cold and rude person. Pregnancy is a very emotional time, and very straining physically. It's not the baby's fault the mom messed up. And not everyone that goes to prison is a horrible person. Actually, the majority of them aren't. And alternative options? What if that person is just going away for 18 months? You're going to make them abort their child? What the actual fuck.

Not related to the question, but related to the topic: does anyone know much about how "conjugal visits" work with female inmates? All I was able to figure out was that they are called "extended family visits", and only 6 states practice them. Only low risk, low security, non violent, std free inamtes qualify for the private family time (which can include kids and spouse). Supposedly it's for helping family ties and supporting a better chance of rehabilitation. Male inmates obviously have no chance of becoming pregnant from these visits, but female inmates would, so are there restrictions or rules to prevent females from becoming pregnant while in prison? Just curious thanks to some baby-induced insomnia. :)

It's super rare for someone already in prison to become pregnant as the prisons are (mostly) segregated. A women going into jail pregnant will probably have healthier foods, more attentive health care (doctors and such) and probably won't be made to do work after a certain point, this is mainly for the baby's wellbeing, but also so the prison won't be charge with human neglect (I think that's what it's called).

I don't know much about it but I recall watching a doc about pregnancy and motherhood in prison. There are prisons that have childs wards, giving small kids a safe place to play and mothers a chance to BF. But I think I remember the parents still can lose their parental rights or past a certain point the child (toddler) can't stay anymore and has to be turned over to a relative or guardian.

Yes, the mother has done wrong and is paying for that. I think you're forgetting the child doesn't deserve to be punished too though. They deserve to see their mom, even if it's just for a few minuets a day. Really, it's not like everyone in jail did something horrible anyway. I don't think someone who, say, steals a car or got caught with weed should automatically be assumed a unloving parent.

My exes brother was born in prison, and if I'm remembering right the dad was able to take him after he was born. Not sure if this has anything to do with what OP asked but I know some of the comments had that question

I don't know what I feel about the woman keeping the baby in prison with her. I'm not sure that prison is the best or safest place for a baby. I don't care if she's the mother, she's doing time.. The baby doesn't need that.

I think most prisons have a good behaviour rule that if they behave they can keep baby inside with them which I do think works for most prison mum's to keep in the  straight and norrow. But for some it isn't enough as they have so many other issues they need more support that prison can't always help with, I mean like outside drug issues and dv on the outside. And some women are so shock by it all the end up ruining it all due being so frightened of what might be. I agree there should be more support for those who need it so they can all leave and move o to better there lives and selves .
