To buy or not to buy

My fiancé and I are so eager to buy things for the baby, especially since we found out we are having a boy. But people have been telling us to stop buying things until the baby shower. I am the type if person that I am a stickler about certain things and like to be prepared. I don't want to wait until what feels like the last minute to get the things I need for my son . What do you all think ?
