4 yr old not potty trained?

Question

So I babysit a kid who is 4 and he is still not potty trained.. Is this normal? I know all kids learn at different times but he is a smart brave child! I feel that the parents just aren't focusing enough on him. They are a beautiful family!! I just don't know how to address this.. Changing a diaper on a 4 yr old is a bit ridiculous to me.. Thoughts? I'm definitely not bashing the parents!! Although I have just started out with children so maybe I just don't know enough.

Sounds like something between parents and their pediatrician. I bet we see all the sanctimommies crawl out of the woodwork to say otherwise though.

I would not babysit a 4 year old in diapers unless they had some sort of delay. I'm not changing a 4 year old. Everyone in my family has been potty trained before there second birthday. While I know that's a little early 4 is crazy. I definitely think it's the parents not trying hard enough or putting time into potty training. Or maybe they don't know where to start ?

Yea it sounds like maybe they haven't worked with him enough and been persistent with it

Unusual. They most likely aren't trying to potty train the child. They need to work with him

It's not unheard of. He may have a delay of some kind either having to do with him or the bathroom, or the parents didn't train diligently enough.

I have a niece didn't master it until 4ish because she slipped on the toilet and had to get stiches early on. Took them that long to get her to not fear it.

I'd say unusual but not unheard of. When I worked in daycare we'd have one here and there that were that age and in diapers or pullups. I agree that most kids that age rly should be potty trained.
