IUD Insertion Story
Hello! I had my Mirena IUD inserted yesterday and just wanted to provide some insight into the process for those considering it. I am 22 and have never been pregnant, so I was concerned about the pain and complications afterwards. The insertion process for me was much easier than the horror stories described online. Of the entire 30-seconds process, there was about 10 seconds of intense cervical pressure and a little rush of blood to my head. My Dr stopped for a few seconds and had me tell her when the cramping had subsided, then the entire process was over about 10 seconds afterwards. I was able to get up and drive myself home immediately afterwards (no dramatic yelling in pain or fainting). I went home and relaxed, and the worst part came about 3 hours after insertion when I was stuck in the fetal position with horrible cramping that radiated to my lower back. However, Aleve and a heating pad were my best friends and got me through it. Today, the cramping has mostly subsided. Despite the cramping and a little bit of spotting, I would say that the Mirena placement itself is incredibly worth it for 5 years of worry-free sex and lighter periods!
