BC for irregular periods?

I have a history of irregular periods for the past few years. They are either really light or so heavy I have to bring an arsenal of tampons with me everywhere I go LOL. I'll have it for 2 or three days, then it will stop for 12-24 hours and then come back, sometimes it will disappear and come back a third time. I also get insane cramps that don't seem to go away with pain killers most of the time. I just sit in a fetal position and hope for the best. I'm trying to make a GYN appointment to make sure everything is ok down there lol.

I've been thinking about starting BC to have a normal period, has anyone with this issue seen success?

I'm considering the patch because of lower dose hormones and I don't trust myself to take a pill everyday.
