Languages?

Question

So my husband is American and I was born here too. My dad is Kurdish and my mom is turkish but she was born here aswell and my dad came here when he was about 10 years old. We live in LA and are just speaking English with them. I really want them to talk Turkish and Kurdish too. Our oldest does know some Kurdish and Turkish words already but has started (in my opinion) too late.
We're adopting a Syrian boy who lived in like the Kurdish part of the land and speaks Kurdish only so we want everyone in the household to know English and Kurdish 100%
My hubby is learning from me and like my family and is actually hella good at it but we dont know how we can teach the other kids since I'm not a pro either😂
So if there's a family in a similar situation as me please tell me how you're doing.

If your Dad is a fluent speaker have him talk to the baby in Kurdish and have his or her new sibling do the same. You can have labels on household items for the four year old in Kurdish and English to help your new family member and your new addition out. Speak both languages at home. Get kids books and read them to the kids in Kurdish so they see how it looks and hear it, plus basic kids books will help your hubby learn at the same time. I'm learning Hebrew because most of husbands family in Israel speaks that better than English and I want my future kid knowing both, I plan on using similar strategies.

I really can't help you, I don't know any Kurdish, I just want to say congratulations on adopting ! That's an amazing thing you're doing!!! It's so beautiful when parents and children can come together and become a family.

It depends on how old your kids are. If they're young (0-1 year) and you speak it around them constantly they'll pick it up no problem, if they're a little older it may be more tricky. The brain isn't as open to learning languages after about 10 years or so (I can't remember the exact age).
It doesn't matter so much if you're not a pro, but if you speak it somewhat fluently and just do so around your kids they'll learn it. And if you come to a bump in your language use, you can teach yourself (from family or other resources). Good luck!

My husband's Chilean and in American an we are going to raise our son worth English and Spanish.. I've read a lot of areas that if you just use it they will pick up on it.. My husband will speak to him in Spanish and i English and e will work together but eventually our son will pick up on both...
