Clothes diapers?

I've been reading some on cloth snap diapers. Used disposable with my other two kids but this may not be as bad as I initially thought. 
What are the diaper inserts for? Are they reusable/ washable as well? How many is a safe number to get? They say that they grow with your child so no bed for multiple sizes

I have never used them because I don't like the "one size" diapers, I just feel like they don't fit well as newborns/small infants. I use flats and prefolds with Thirsties covers.  Flats during the day and prefolds at night. I did use fuzzi bunz (the old style with s/m/l) with my older kids. I've tried so many brands and just feel like this is what works best. I think 12-16 is a great number of covers and 2 dozen flats. If you buy covers used, they're usually $5-7 a piece and flats are about $25 a dozen, or you can use flour sack towels from Walmart which run about $1 each. Do not use gauze Gerber style prefolds, buy diaper quality prefolds online.  The Gerbers are awful.

You can buy disposable or reusable inserts. I would say a good number of snap cloth diapers would be 14-16 in various sizes, but you'll need a lot more inserts,
Especially if you do disposable.
