"Snowball fights"

My SO and I just moved in together. We fight on some occasions, but the fights start little and seem to snowball into what feels like a bigger problem. We are trying really hard to prevent the snowball fights (so we can have less potential of something being thrown out of proportion enough that one of us moves out) and I'm curious if any of you guys have any advice for how to prevent a little fight from snowballing.
