Why wait 7 days?

I had the Mirena IUD put in 5 days ago, but wasn't on my period. I'm irregular so I have no clue where I was in my cycle. Why do I need to wait 7 days to have unprotected sex with my boyfriend?

I was told as soon as they insert it I didn't have to worry about it. My doctor said I could go home and have sex right then and it would work.

It may not be effective before 7 days if that's the timeframe your doctor gave you. If you get it put in on the first few days of your period, then it is effective immediately. If you dont, then you have to use back up methods or you could still get pregnant.

Why wait 7 days?
