How do you discipline your pets?

I grew up in a house that used physical methods. It's second nature to me to use physical discipline (smacking the hind leg or nose, showing them what they did wrong & popping them for it) because it's what my parents taught me growing up, but I don't really care for the idea of it & try to avoid it. If I do it without thinking about it, I feel bad for it. So, I want to know what others do.

For example, if your dog knocks over the trash or the cat is clawing the couch... What do you do?

I've found that my pets don't care for canned air, so I often spray that to get them to stop what they are doing. At this point, I just pick up the can. I rarely have to spray it.

These are my kitties in the picture. My phone is being stupid & won't let me download a pic of my dogs. They're all very loved though & not by any means abused, so please keep any hateful comments to yourself.
