Older child woes!

Does anyone else that has older children having problems with them acting helpless? My step son is 8 and in the last month it's like he forgot he was 8 and able to do things by himself. It's driving me absolutely crazy! He has 2 sisters from his mom so it's not like he hasn't done this before, but he is acting so beyond helpless I'm to the point I don't want to be around him! Has anyone else experienced this? I hate being this way with him because he is such a good kid, but I'm not sure I can handle this much longer! And my husband and I have already had a conversation with him about it, but it was like talking to the wall.
