Break Ups

I've been with my boyfriend for 5 years now, and I'm about to turn 18 and go to college 1,600 miles away from home. I broke up with my boyfriend last night because we went on a date and we fought for the whole 4 and a half hours we were together. I just don't think things are going to work when I leave and so I ended it now rather then when I got there. But, he's reluctant to let go and let me break up with him. He keeps saying he can't do it, he has no one, etc. it's hurting me more and more as he says those things and I don't know if I've made the right decision. I told him we could be friends, and could still hang out but without the relationship aspect involved and he agreed. I'm so unbelievably sad but I can't shake that that's just the feeling that comes with a break up. I don't know if I'm making the right decision. I feel like I'm in more pain without him than I was with him.
