I have gotten back with an abusive partner. The outcome was more abuse.

Nope. He never got help, so I never went back.

My sister took her abusive ex back after he claimed to have change. He's now serving time for attempted murder.

I've never been in an abusive relationship, but my mother has. She split with this guy, he was jailed for awhile, and she picked him up upon his release and went back with him. I absolutely could not understand that. Whenever I tried to question my mother's reasoning for it all, she was always highly defensive and nothing ever came of it. Anyway, the guy continued his abuse. It was a total of 6 years, a second arrest before she "got it." She did get it and she was able to leave him for good. This was several years ago, but I still see evidence of her trying to heal even today. It was sad. It was hard for me to see my mother in that environment.
