FTM & what we need to buy question?!

So hubs and I are first time parents! We are really having a hard time on planning what to buy, when to buy it, what to save and not buy (leave for the baby shower) and when to buy the big stuff!

Also curious to know if any of you guys saved a certain amount before baby was due or just over purchased everything?

How many diapers do I buy, formula, baby creams and soaps, ECT! 
I try and buy things when I find them on sale and pack them away~ we are moving when I am 4/5 months pregnant 😁😬

We bought all big items for nursery (crib, changing table, dresser, etc.) shortly after reaching 12 weeks because those items are so personal and such a big ticket item. I left stroller, car seat, all linens, mattress, and small things for the shower (including clothes! Don't go buy a bunch of clothes--that's like the #1 thing people want to buy you because they are so cute! So save your money and let people buy you clothes. You can always fill in the gaps after your shower if you didn't get certain clothes you think you need). 
I also have been in habit of buying a pack of diapers or pack of wipes everytime I grocery shop. It's only about 10$ more at the time and we have a nice collection saved up now and our budget hasn't felt that small increase (because we aren't buying in large quantities like we'd have to once baby comes). 
Also, not sure if you've looked at daycare costs (if you need it) but where we live it's about $1000 a month! So knowing we'll HAVE to pay that once baby comes, we've gotten in habit of saving as much of that as we can each month prior to baby arrival to help pay for hospital costs of delivery! (Even if it's only $100 one month, it's something saved!)
It's been tough and caused more of a tight budget, but I feel it's really preparing us for when baby comes. Once baby is here these costs won't be "optional" so might as well try to get used to it now! Sorry such a long post, I hope it helps! Best of luck!

Don't buy clothes at all if you are having a baby shower. Try and resist unless if there is an outfit you just HAVE to have. Our registry was clear as day & did even have very expensive items on it, but most people still just bought us clothes. We also got a decent amount of diapers, which is nice. If you are stockpiling diapers, I'd say continue to do so, cause you can always trade sizes. 
We bought our travel system and crib ourselves when I was around 28-30 weeks. That was our biggest investment really. 
I got about $300 in gift cards that helped purchase most of the remaining things off of my registry that I felt I *needed*. 
My mother is still buying our monitor for us (bless her), and my aunt & grandma have agreed to get our swing. We also have a friend giving us a bassinet.

If I could go back, I'd probably buy myself a babies r us or target gift card every paycheck to put towards future baby stuff. Because I didn't know what I really needed until after my baby shower.

I got most of my big stuff through out the whole pregnancy so it didn't put too much of a financial strain on us trying to wait for the last minute with my first son but then I realized what I will and will not use so is a little easier this time around the only thing I'm concerned with is a convertible crib so that it will grow with baby and save some money, a car seat and a stroller everything else seems frivolous to me.  I already have a chair that rocks in case this baby likes to be rocked ( my son did not so my glider went unused) a changing table is pointless because we spend all of our time in the living room just planned on getting a cheap changing pad and change diapers where ever I go. I haven't started buying clothes yet because we won't know the gender till the 18th.  But I went ahead and got a highchair and started buying diapers of all sizes and wipes everytime there is money to spare.  I'm saving everything else for my combined baby /diaper raffle shower
