Irregular periods and ttc

Both my mom and grandma had irregular periods and were both able to concieve without trying my mom said she didnt have a period in 2 years and got pregnant with me and didnt know until she was around 18 weeks.....Me and my boyfriend were trying for 6 months and i just couldnt take the negatives every month....So we decied to stop....I wanted to start trying next year just too see would it happen....But i just dont want to feel like it isnt going to happen....Has any concieved with irregular periods and not trying but not preventing either ?
