How did you choose your career?

Hey ladies. 
 So I graduated high school long about. I've been in and out of college mainly due to finances. My big issue is I don't l know what I want to do. I'm not one who knew what I've wanted to be when I grew up. I don't have many skills, but I'm quick to learn and extremely detail oriented. The only thing I sort of had a passion about was midwifery. Delivering babies. But that dream went away because of so much negativity from others. I've been depressed. Everyone says just do something, but I feel that's waste to do something just because. 
QUESTONS:
How did you pick you career/job path?
Did you have opposition? 
Did anyone go back to school later in life? If so, how did that affect your persobal life-work, SO, home life, etc?

Any advice is appreciated.

I always wanted to be a Teacher and thats what I chose. If you want to deliver babies and be either a midwife or obgyn then do that! I don't know why people would oppose that. This is YOUR life. Whatever you chose will impact the rest of your life if you stay with it. Who cares what people think!

I didn't. It felt into my lap and I ran with it.

I WAS working as an office admin for a real estate agency, when another one took us over. They released me, 3 agents & the boss, in November....

I had been helping my stepdad & his business partner at night, pulling cables for a job they had to get over the line, they paid me in cash. I didn't bother trying to find a job that close to Xmas, I was, at the time, still working at my local McDonald's & picked up extra shifts (was still living at home).

I still helped my stepdad's company out where required, commissioning things, pulling cables etc. & in Jan they offered my an apprenticeship, I accepted. My then BF & I had just moved out because his parents moved interstate & it was easier than going through, applying for jobs, waiting to hear back, going for interviews etc.

That was 10.5 yrs ago & how I became an electrician. I still work for my stepdad's company. They paid to send me to trade school & I learnt valuable skills/other training on the job, I'm a qualified electrician (tho working in air con controls I don't have the best electrical knowledge), 1st aid trained including extended CPR, qualified to enter/work in confined spaces, low voltage rescue trained (ie if they get hooked up to a live switchboard how to properly rescue them), & others which have to do with my job (Comms cables (CAT6/telephone), software for the stuff we use etc).

I have held the apprentice role, a service tech (helping to do service calls for breakdowns, & maint on our system) & now a project engineer (programming controllers, creating graphics for the end user to be able to control their air con system etc). Which is good because I get a company car/car allowance, pretty good pay, a uniform (SO much easier than trying to figure out what to wear every morning lol), tools, a phone, a laptop AND I get to work in the office which is 10 mins from home.

I worked in retail for 17 years, made my way up the ladder from cashier to director of stores. The money was great. Well, I got pregnant, then got let go while I was on bedrest due to complications. After my son was born, I collected unemployment benefits and went back to school at the age of 31. I graduated at the top of my class with a certificate in culinary arts. Started my internship, and was hired on day 3. That was November 2014. By February 2015 I was a line cook, and 2 weeks ago I was promoted to Assistant Food Service Director (sous chef).

The money is nowhere close to what I was making previously, but I have never been happier. My boss is amazing and I love all of the people that I work with.

Who cares what other people say? They can choose their own job. 
I'm a vet tech, got my associates degree right after high school but there were a lot of people in the program going back to school, and I work with a woman who is 47 and just graduated the program. My parents were unhappy I didn't go for a BA but you have to do what makes you happy and this was it for me. The pay is nowhere near what you'd make as an RN but it wasn't about the money for me.

Im a CNA and people have more negative than positive things to say about like a glorified butt wiper etc. But i will tell you i love what i do and it gives me a great feeling knowing i helped someone that can barely help themselves anymore and i feel like i have made a difference it's not an easy or fun job but i love it and i say go for what you want regardless of what people have to say its your life so fulfill your dreams

I got into IT because I've always been good at computers.  I originally wanted to pursue astrophysics but it's hard to get jobs in that field.  I work in IT and love it because there is something new to learn. Medical field is amazing and if you can get into nursing school go for it. It's always a need and pays well.

I actually just decided to pursue midwifery! I also got a lot of blacklash growing up, and just last week when i told my grandparents i wouldnt be attending nursing school to start working towards becoming a midwife, but in then end its my life. Do what makes you happy, and what you have a passion for. At the end of the day, I'd rather be happy with my job than dread going to work everyday. Its your life, live it for yourself. Whoever isn't supporting you doesnt have your happiness at heart.

I am a surgical technician been doing it now for almost three years now. I always wanted to an archeologist mainly studying Egypt it's my favorite place and what not. When I got older I had wanted to be in the medical field I love helping others and making them feel better. It wasn't easy I had people that doubted me but I used that as motivation to prove them wrong and full filed my dreams. Don't let others negativity stop you go after what you want.
