Using a dildo for the first time - Fail. Help or tips?

Super shy 22 year old with almost zero sexual experience here... After graduating college and moving away from home for work, I have been wanting to experiment with sex toys. Never have had sex before, so I figured toys would be my best option to experiment first. I have never gone past clitoral stimulation while mastrubating, which has only happened a handful of times, and wanted to try something different now that I live by myself and don't have to worry about being embarassed by someone walking in at the wrong time.

In order to begin this experimentation, I purchased a 7" dildo, condoms, and water based lubricant. I just tried to mastrubate tonight using the dildo with a condom on it and lube. Once I tried to insert it into my vagina, it just hurt like hell. It hurt so bad that I couldn't even insert it more than half an inch before I just stopped altogether.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Did I do something wrong? Thoughts and tips are appreciated!
