Do you believe in spanking for discipline?

Question

By spanking, I don't mean beating. There's a difference. If your child is acting up and you've tried all options, do you believe in spanking them on the butt?

Obviously, there is a certain age where it's not nessasary.

& if you don't believe in spanking, what do you do if you've tried everything and they still don't listen?

I also want everyone to respect other opinions.

I was spanked as a child. And not for every mishap. When it was serious, or I was endangering myself or others, I got spanked. And I turned out just fine. So no, I will have no problems with spanking my children.

Obviously beating and little swat are different. However they are still hitting! If I want to teach my kid that hitting is wrong why would I hit them? It's hypocritical.

I'm 16 and still get slapped if I'm disrespectful. I know that it's wrong and that my parents aren't doing it to abuse me, its to teach me a lesson... respect your parents. I don't think spanking is any different. It's discipline.

I don't speak, and haven't ever. As for what I do, it depends on the situation. There's no one magic answer for every situation.

I only do it after 3 chances, which include reminding him why it's wrong and what effects his behavior has.

I was a child that wouldn't do anything unless I understood specifically why to do or not do it, I'm still like this. My mother was a "because I said so" person. I feel explaining *why* is so important.

I've worked with kids for about 15 years (ages 6 months - 12 years) and I've never laid a hand on any kid but I've disciplined many. I've always been able to find a way to get through to them without spanking so why would I resort to spanking my own kids? We're always able to tell the kids that are spanked at home because they are the ones that hit other kids instead of working out why they are frustrated. I don't agree with it at all.

For me the decision is personal. My parents spanked me only occasionally and in the most reasonable possible way. They were always calm. I always knew why I was being spanked. I was always hugged afterward. However, even in the best circumstances, I felt humiliated every time. I felt unloved and like my parents weren't on my side. I learned to avoid the offenses not because I understood it was wrong, but in order to avoid the feeling of shame that accompanied the punishment.

In one instance I even acted out in order to receive the spanking because I wanted attention. This attention seeking is bound to happen with kids, but it would be so much better if it resulted in words with the parent. The parent might even be able to realize the kid just was acting up to get attention. Instead I was spanked, and I was happy with it since it got my dad off the TV and paying attention to me. I don't think he did anything wrong, but he did miss an opportunity. I've always thought this was really sad and never want that for my kids.

Anyone have a similar experience? Perfectly reasonable spanking routine, but it still felt damaging?
