bleeding??

over the weekend I was gonna lose my virginity but when he stuck it in (not even the whole thing), it hurt so badly that I had to stop and I began to bleed because my hymen had been stretched. the next day, we decided instead of trying to have sex again, we decided he'd just finger me, which happened and led to even more bleeding so we stopped to not make a mess. is this normal? should I wait a few days before resuming sexual activity?
