Hair stylists?

Well, I have red hot roots. About the first four inches of my hair are bright red. The ends are a dark red, it isn't noticeable in sunlight. It's not a pretty ombré lol it looks awful and very clear that I had no idea what I was doing. I know red is very hard to get out of hair. I've been blonde, brunette, red, I would like to try out a very light brown, almost blonde. I have dark brown eyes and everyone has told me they reccomend that color. How would I be able to get this red out, and get an even very light brown color? I know it isn't reccomended either, but I really can't afford to go to a salon or something like that to take care of this right now. If I could get products from Sally's or something and if someone could educate me a bit better it'd be most helpful!
