Why do we celebrate birthdays?

I'm just curious why we celebrate birthdays. I like it and I do it, I just have no REASON to like it and do it...which kind of bothers me because I like to have reason.

Celebrate one year more that you didn't die.

Celebrate the fact that on your birthday you successfully managed to evacuate someone else's body.

I don't entirely know why... but usually on my fiancés birthday I give a shout out to his parents as well. Without them he wouldn't be here. I mean they're pretty much responsible for creating him and bringing him into the world. I know they get a mother's day and a father's day to celebrate them being parents, but we also have sons day and daughters day so I'm not sure why we have individual birthdays as well. I'm at that age where I don't really care to celebrate the passing of another year or to mark the changing of my age. It's just weird to me. I wasn't huge on it as a kid either. Like yay, I'm another year older... who cares. I'll do it for my kiddos because everyone else does and I don't want them to feel left out. But if they ever ask us to stop, it won't break my heart.

I haven't celebrated my birthday in years. It's not that I care about growing older, it's just another day, it's not that special to me. I've got friends who go out partying and make a big deal out of it every year and it's just not for me. Now I'll celebrate the crap outta my kids and husbands birthday, but mine... Eh. Give me a night off from cooking dinner and I'm cool.
