Sooo idk what is wrong with me

My last 3 periods, including the one that just started today have been brown discharge with like a little bit of blood. But mostly brown discharge. And it's thick (sorry a little tmi) but it goes on for pretty much the normal amount of time (5-6days) but my cycle has been a day or two shorter than usual. I read somewhere that brown period blood is normal if you aren't ovulating (like on the pill) but I'm not, nor have I ever used any type of birth control(besides condoms)... And I should be ovulating. It's stressing me out to think that I might not be ovulating like I should. Should I worry? I don't want to have to pay to go see a doctor. I'm a 20 year-old college student, but I want advice. :/
