Baby name problems?

So my mother is really pushing to have me name our baby after a family member. Is it selfish to want to pick our own name for the baby? She makes me feel very bad about this decision like i would be a horrible person if I don't name our baby after family. Any one else run into this problem? I don't know how to nicely say I want to pick our own name. 😥

It's your baby! You are the one to choose, and they don't really have a say unless you let them. Just let her know that you are looking for other names, if she doesn't like that, then maybe say you'll use a middle name that is from the family!

Nope. She will get over it. Stop allowing the discussion, period. Tell her when you decide on a name it will be kept a surprise until birth. By then she will not care as much, but for now if she brings it up, just ignore the question.

Why does she think she gets to dictate how or what you name your baby?  If my mom tried that I'd straight up tell her to fuck off.  Tell her it's not her baby and not her choice and that's the end of the conversation.

In the same position! My grandfather passed in March and his name was Edward. We have Garrett picked for a first name and I like Edward as a middle name, but my fiancés grandfather has also passed and his family is suggesting his middle name which is Noel which I like as well. I'm tempted to just pick something and not say anything until he is born! I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings either way, but I know it's going to happen

I don't have advice on how to talk to her, but my son is named entirely after his fathers (my ex-husband) side of the family. I've regretted it since day one, and with my daughter her first name isn't In either family, but her middle name was chosen as a meaningful nod to both sides, as it is my husbands moms middle name as well as my grandmothers. I would go with what you want as it is YOUR baby. No matter what anyone says don't name your child something you're going to regret for the rest of your life because you felt pressured into it. It only leads to resentment towards the people who made you feel like you had to do something you really didn't want to do.

No it's not selfish. It's controlling of her to push it. We all wanna make momma happy but she's kinda gotta get over it. I'd pick a name and not announce until the baby is born, or tell her. when she objects, I'd be nice and smile and just say, no, we like what we've picked. You don't owe her an explanation. If you absolutely positively want to.compromise you can make it a middle name. If you don't want to, just don't. Good luck!
