Baby monitors

Looking for suggestions on baby monitors that worked well for you or if you even felt one was necessary at all. For the first few months we plan on keeping our son in our room, but I know during nap times I'm going to want to check up on him without constantly going in and out. Did you get a video or sound baby monitor, and did you feel like it was a good baby purchase or worth the money. And what brand is your favorite?
