Mat leave

I just found out that my job is not going to approve my maternity leave because I have not been with the company long enough. I requested an unpaid leave and it was denied as well. I was told by the HR department that i "might" qualify, if I have a medical reason, (as if having a baby isn't enough of a medical reason). Anyone else facing a similar challenge? What did you do?
