When You Pay at The Pump
Sorry for the long read!
So I work in a gas station and at least once a week I'll get a customer come in complaining that they paid at the pump and only got this much gas but when they checked their balance they were charged 75 dollars extra.
So I tell them it's their bank. 95% of the customers weren't aware because they had just gotten the card or had never paid at the pump before.
But yesterday! Now let me tell you about yesterday.
A woman comes in, walks to the counter and starts bitching (there's no other word to describe it) at me because she pumped 25 dollars of gas and noticed her account was charged 75 dollars all together.
So I tell her "I'm sorry mam but that's not us doing it. That's the bank that holds a certain amount of money when you pay at the pump but it's typically back on the card within a few days"
She gets more mad "I've pumped gas thousands of times and always pay outside and that has never happened. I've never heard of that. Why don't you have warning signs up on the pumps about it"
I continue to attempt to explain that it's not our store charging her extra, it's the bank and it's just a temporary hold then it gets put back on the card. That each bank has their own policy for it and it'll be in the banks terms and conditions.
Well she's still mad so a guy I work with, but was not on the clock, in fact he didn't work at all, was standing by the counter listening and finally goes "maybe you just never noticed the charge before"
Well that really got her because she starts yelling at him now that she always pays attention to her finances and she keeps a good eye on them and so on... So the guy just says well obviously not if you never noticed the hold and left. Woman points at the door, says "he pissed me off" then tells me she would have believed what I told her, but he made her mad (I mean really if she believed me then why did she continue to argue with me? But whatever)
She asks for my boss' number, I tell her I can't give it out, because it's his personal cell phone number, not one for angry customers to call while he's spending time with his family. She asks for a business card, didn't want it because it has the number to the gas station, not his cell.
Then she raises her voice to ask me who's running the place. "I am" I tell her, because I was. It's a small family owned place and I was running it by myself yesterday.
She is so mad then, my husband comes out of the bathroom (he also works there) and asks her what's going on and offers to call the owner. Of course that's what she wants even though we're not supposed to call him with stuff like that, because the answer is still the same.
So after multiple times of trying to call him, finally get ahold of him, and she tells him the same thing about the pump. Then tells him about the worker telling her maybe she doesn't pay attention. Well after five minutes and ending the conversation with "I will get my fifty dollars back and I'm calling the bank to see if they do this" she hands me the phone and leaves (thank God)
So I tell the owner what happened with her and how she walked in, which he knew cuz he was watching the camera at the time he was talking to her. He goes "well he's right (talking about the other guy that works there) I don't think she's noticed it."
Anyway, is anyone else oblivious to the bank holding a certain amount for a certain length of time when you pay at the pump? Or does your bank not do this (most do, or at least here they do).
