Epidural question

hi guys. I get induced on Saturday at 6 AM and I was just wondering how soon could I get an epidural? I'm already almost a 3. But my friend had said if I get it too early it'll wear off and I don't want that to happen. Have any of you guys got it at 5 cm and it had the full effect the whole time? I don't want it to wear off. Thank you
