My Daughter's Name
Ok, ladies, I could use some thoughts -
I'm almost 38 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and my husband and I are over the moon.
My husband is Mexican/Japanese and comes from a VERY large family. His culture is incredibly important to him, and it has been so much fun learning and respecting his many traditions. I'm a mixed bag of white races and Choctaw Indian, but my family never strongly emphasized any cultural traditions at all.
Our daughter's name is Xochitl Quinn (pronounced SO-chee). It's Aztec, and means "little flower". In Aztec legend, Xochitl was a warrior queen who lead the first documented all-woman army to defend their city during war. It's been my husbands "if-i-have-a-daughter" name since he was 14, and I've fallen in love with it.
My (very white bread) family has not been super supportive of our decision. My Mother is very upset that we're not giving her a "christian" name. To me, "Christian names" were just an excuse for white explorers to call people "John" or "Rebecca" instead of have to learn to say Pocahontas or Kalakaua.
Xochitl is being born into a multiracial family, but her Hispanic heritage will be the primary culture we raise her in.
My question is, how do I go about addressing my family and friends' (and strangers) desire to whitewash my daughters name? Anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance 😘
