Love is Love Is Love is Love is Love

Yesterday, a white female cop came into my  store here in Nashville to buy lunch. She had a pretty big order, multiple meals, likely to bring back to other people at her workplace. Before she could pay, a black man in his early thirties (best guess)-who had already eaten, and was talking with some friends at his table- cut into the line and placed his hand over the credit card reader.

"Good afternoon," he nodded at each of us, then turned to the cop. "Ma'am," he asked, "may I buy your lunch?"

She just stood there, looking at him as if he'd gifted her a new car. Without asking again, he swiped his card and told me he had it covered. He thanked her for protecting our community and our city, and told her that if she wanted to talk about anything, he and his friends were just across the room with open arms.

And the craziest part is that after he walked away, after she and I both stood there for a minute, doing that eye roll up that you use when you're trying not to cry (you know what I mean, don't lie!) she walked over and sat down with them while her food was being made.

I don't know what they discussed, maybe just the weather, but it mattered. They hugged before she left the cafe. His act of LOVE, his words and his money, they said "I don't blame you. I know you're better than the system." I didn't catch her name, but I know she's already a better law enforcement officer for being reminded that she is appreciated.

Dialogue. Love. Change. #blacklivesmatter #unitenashville
