High Bilirubin Levels from Birth

My son was born Oct 5, 2016 at 37 weeks and 2 days. His first bilirubin test was an 8.7 so they had me start supplementing with formula (was trying to breastfeed but he was having latching problems). The formula was started at about 8 hours after birth.

They checked him again a few hours later and it had jumped to a 12 something. So they said he'd be put under the phototherapy lights. They brought him out to me every 3 hours for 30 mins to breastfeed. He was doing well on one breast so he was eating. On the third day of our stay, they said his levels were still high but for some reason they sent us home. They just told me to feed him in the sunlight of an open window. I did that when we got home but he just quit latching completely. So he was going on strict formula even though I was offering breast every feeding.

He had his first check up this past Tuesday where the pediatrician ordered another bili test. It came back at a 22. They ordered us to go home immediately, pack our bags and head to Texas Children's Hospital. We did and got there around 3pm. They checked his bili again when we got there and it was a 24.6

They got us in a room and hooked him into the phototherapy incubator. I was pumping what I could when I could and giving him that along with formula. When we were discharged, his level was a 14. They sent us home yesterday afternoon and told me things to look for that needed immediate treatment.

For any mommies out there who have dealt with jaundice, what do I need to do to make sure he doesn't end up elevating again? He's still not latching but I'm pumping for him and he's taking formula. He's 8 days old.

Also, I took his temperature about 20 mins ago and it was 99.1F (rectally).

I'm a first time mommy and I'm so nervous about this and worried he's going to end up getting very sick from this.

And also, he's being fed every two hours and eats about an ounce. Although today he's been eating 2 ounces every hour (maybe a growth spurt?) And he's got an appointment tomorrow to check his bili again.

I just need someone who's been through this to tell me it'll pass and he'll be okay in a few weeks.
