getting a baby to sleep.

I really need some advice on how to get my 4 month old baby to sleep at night. I've tried sleep training however i seem to be going in to comfort him all night. He just does not fall asleep for hours.. and by the time he does fall asleep it's like 12 am and I'm exhausted and ready for bed.. any advice please!
